FAQs

Q: What kind of candidates does SEA Lab look for?

A: Passion, curiosity, and dedication. We’re looking for people who are always curious and view research as fun and exciting, rather than just “another task to complete”. We want someone who is truly passionate about what they do and committed to making a meaningful impact in the real world.

Q: I have research experience in HCI/AI but none in health (or the other way around). Is that okay?

A: Absolutely! You already have a great starting point. Our research needs expertise from all these aspects, so we welcome you to leverage your strengths, while also encouraging you to explore and learn new fields as you work with us.

Q: What’s the best way to learn about current projects in SEA Lab?

A: We regularly update our Research and Publication pages, where you can find the latest work from the lab. You are also welcomed to reach out to any of our members if you are curious to learn more about specific projects—they are always happy to share!

Q: What kind of support or mentorship can I expect as a SEA Lab member?

A: We hope you come to the lab with a goal, or at least the plan to discover your goal. A major part of Orson’s role is to support every single lab member in achieving their goals. Think of SEA Lab as a resource hub that fuels your journey: You decide your direction, and we’re dedicated to making that path a reality together.

Q: What opportunities are there for collaboration within SEA Lab and across other labs?

A: Collaboration is an essential skill for researchers. We encourage (while not enforce) collaboration within the team and across other labs. Feel free to reach out to anyone for potential collaboration, whether it’s joining their projects or inviting them to join yours.

Q: What’s the vibe working in SEA Lab?

A: We love what we do. We are dedicated to make real-world impacts. We only do high-quality research and build great stuff. And yes, we may work hard, but we play harder.

Q: How does compensation work for SEA Lab members?

A: Ph.D. students will receive full support (tuition waiver + stipend) as outlined by the DBMI/CS programs. We aim to provide as many RAs as possible, with TAs as a backup (which can be a fun and rewarding experience too) Unfortunately, we cannot offer paid opportunities for undergraduate or master’s RAs, and Columbia policy does not allow us to pay remote interns.
